Completing the programme in different languages

The master’s programme in art and media is a multilingual programme. If you have been admitted to a specific major in the master’s admissions, you will complete your studies in the language of this major. If you have progressed to the master’s studies from the bachelor’s major in Visual Communication Design, you may complete the studies included in the programme mainly in Finnish or mainly in English. If you have progressed to the master’s studies from the bachelor’s major in art education, you will complete your studies in the master’s major in art education mainly in Finnish.

In the master’s programme in art and media, the languages of the majors are:

  • Finnish (teaching mainly in Finnish): Art Education
  • Finnish & English (students are able to choose more than half of their studies from courses arranged in Finnish): Visual Communication Design
  • English (teaching in English): Game Design and Development, New Media, Photography, Sound in New Media, Visual Cultures, Curating and Contemporary Art

If you wish to complete the programme mainly in a specific language, you will find below instructions on what kind of choices you need to make during your studies in the programme. It is not necessary to complete the programme in a specific language; you may also choose studies in different languages in accordance with the curriculum. In addition to the advanced programme and major studies, the degree includes elective studies, which you may choose and complete in the language you prefer.

Languages used in studies

In the table describing the language path of the studies (below), the language of instruction of the course implementation and any additional language of instruction are indicated. The language of instruction is the language in which the teaching is given. The additional language of instruction is a language used alongside the language of instruction. On the MyCourses pages you will find a more detailed description of the languages used on the course.

You may complete your coursework, such as written assignments or presentations, in the language of instruction or in the additional language of instruction. On some implementations there's also a language of study attainment which is not used in teaching but you can give your assignments in that language. The available languages of study attainment are indicated in Sisu in the implementation information.
