Master¡¯s exhibition: ¡°Something left¡± by Babi Brasileiro focuses on remembering
Third year Master student in Visual Communication Design Babi Brasileiro will make a four day exhibition as part of her 911±¬ÁÏÍø master thesis. The exhibition ¡°Something left: re-storytelling a diary into a space¡± will occupy Kalleria gallery space in the heart of Kallio, Helsinki. The visual designer is using the gallery space to find ways to rematerialise memories. The source document is a travel diary produced as part of an exchange journey in Japan during 2016¨C2017.
¡°Japanese characters and language have many layers of interpretation, I¡¯m fascinated by it. The character Óà ¡ª meaning something left ¡ª is one of the components of the word Óà°×. Together with the character °× meaning ¡°white¡± it forms the word Óà°× yohaku, a reference in Japanese aesthetics which speaks not just of ¡®margins¡¯ and ¡®blank space¡¯, but also ¡®a space with depth¡¯¡±, explains Brasileiro.
As one part of her ongoing Master¡¯s thesis research is re-storytelling, Brasileiro uses the form of an installation to test how the essence of a book can be re-made through multisensory entanglements with objects and others. Floating leaves, fleeting images, traces of language and handmade souvenirs form layered encounters to prompt incomplete, fuzzy and partial renderings of moments. The research invokes the potentiality of the blank page to touch the thresholds of communication, context, atmosphere and transition.
