Juho Kuosmanen’s Compartment No. 6 (Hytti nro 6) wins Grand Prix award at Cannes
Juho Kuosmanen collected the Grand Prix at the Cannes film festival for his film Compartment no. 6, sharing the award with Iranian director Ashgar Farhad for his film A Hero.
The film has been produced by the Film Company Aamu. Director Kuosmanen and editor Jussi Rautaniemi are Aalto alumni, and set designer Kari Kankaanpää a student at the Department of Film, Television and Scenography, where also sound designer Pietu Korhonen has studied.
The film was shot in early 2020 in Russia in authentic conditions: on a train to Murmansk, as well as in small remote villages along the way. Subtle humor and the atmosphere of a crowded Russian train set the tone for the unexpected joint journey of a student and a miner from Moscow to Murmansk. The warm and sincere road movie was inspired by the author, artist Rosa Liksom's Finlandia award-winning novel Compartment No. 6 (Hytti nro 6, WSOY, 2011).
The film will premiere in cinemas in fall 2021.
The 74th Cannes Film Festival took place from 6 to 17 July 2021. The main series in Cannes has featured films by Martin Scorsese, Akira Kurosawa, Federico Fellini, Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, Pedro Almodóvar and Jane Campion.
Kuosmanen is the second Finnish director to pick up the award, after Aki Kaurismäki won the Grand Prix in 2002 for The Man Without a Past
