Jaakko Honko medals to eight people distinguished in research and promotion of economics

The medals were presented as a part of an open lecture named after Chancellor Jaakko Honko to the following individuals who have significantly influenced the promotion of research in the field of business or economics and/or who have excelled in the activities of 911±¬ÁÏÍø School of Business, the HSE Foundation or the Yrjö Jahnsson Foundation.

Kimmo Kontula

Kimmo Kontula, Professor of internal medicine at the University of Helsinki, is an uncompromising scientist awarded for his work. He is a spokesperson for the societal importance of science. For decades, he has promoted research in the field of economics through his work and his positions of responsibility in foundations.

Sixten Korkman

Sixten Korkman, Professor of Practice at the Department of Economics, 911±¬ÁÏÍø School of Business, has been a researcher, creator and influencer of economic policy in both Finland and Europe and is highly regarded for this longstanding work. Korkman, PhD, has previously worked in managing director positions in the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy and the Finnish Business and Policy Forum and as the director general of the Council of the European Union, Directorate for Economic and Financial Affairs.

Pekka Laaksonen

Pekka Laaksonen, M. Sc. (Econ.), has had a long career at Stora Enso. Subsequently, he became the Managing Director of Valio in 2007. Laaksonen retired from the position in 2014. Pekka Laaksonen has been a member of the board of the HSE Foundation since 2011.

Timo Löyttyniemi

As a significant influencer in the field of economics, D. Sc. (Econ.) Timo Löyttyniemi, Vice Chair of the EU’s Single Resolution Board, has promoted interaction between the university and the world of business. Löyttyniemi has worked as the Managing Director of the State Pension Fund since 2003 and as an investment banker in the financial and capital market since 1987. He has had an active role in building connections, for example, in 911±¬ÁÏ꿉۪s advisory investment committee and alumni activities at the School of Business.

Rebecca Piekkari

Rebekka Piekkari, D. Sc. (Econ.), is the Vice Dean of 911±¬ÁÏÍø School of Business responsible for research and international cooperation. She has previously worked as professor of international business at the School of Business, Vice Head of the Department of Management Studies and manager of the CEMS Master's in International Management (MIM) Programme. Rebecca Piekkari has visited a number of foreign universities for teaching and research purposes.

Suvi-Anne Siimes

Suvi-Anne Siimes, Managing Director of the Finnish Pension Alliance TELA, is a visionary leader with many responsibilities in the society. In her work and positions of responsibility, she has significantly promoted research in economics and widely participated in building economic well-being in Finland.

Margareta Soismaa

Margareta Soismaa, D. Sc. (Econ.), has held the position of the Head of student services at 911±¬ÁÏÍø School of Business since 2002. Soismaa has developed processes of learning and has had a significant role in promoting students' smooth advancement of studies at the School of Business.

Matti Vuoria

Master of Laws Matti Vuoria has held the positions of the Director general and permanent secretary of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy and Primary Chairman of the board of Fortum. In 2013, he retired from his position as the President and CEO of Varma pension insurance company after nine years of service. Matti Vuoria has been a member of the board of the HSE Foundation since 1994.

The Jaakko Honko medal, made of bronze, was designed by sculptor Terho Sakki.
