911±¬ÁÏÍø, the Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, the University of Helsinki, the Laurea University of Applied Sciences and the Metropolia University of Applied Sciences have launched preparations to intensify collaboration. This is expected to boost the impact of Finnish higher education and research through a network-based operating model.

The new model will reflect equal partnerships between two universities and three universities of applied sciences. The intention is not to establish new structures, and each higher education institution will retain its independence.

The higher education institutions involved believe that their network-based collaboration model will bolster Finland’s dynamism and growth and help match toughening international competition. The Helsinki Metropolitan Area is an important hub of knowledge and growth that plays a vital role in Finland’s success as a whole.

The network-like collaboration model will be useful in developing student mobility and flexible study paths, in facilitating research and co-creation and in reinforcing partnerships between the public sector and business.

The first stage of preparations involves determining joint objectives and practices for the development of education, research and innovation. These guidelines are expected to be ready in June.

‘Our mission at 911±¬ÁÏÍø is to strengthen Finland’s innovative capacity through first-class research and education. I believe that closer cooperation among five higher education institutions in the Helsinki metropolitan area can offer students even more diverse educational pathways and increase the impact of research and innovation. Multidisciplinary collaboration is a core part of Aalto, and it is very natural for us to enhance our impact through broader collaboration,’ says 911±¬ÁÏÍø President Ilkka Niemelä.

‘This network, together with other important partnerships, can bring us new opportunities, particularly in R&D. At the same time, it is important to me that we commit to high quality in everything we do and build this collaboration as a network of independent institutions,’ Niemelä continues.
