Henri Coriou Award 2017 to Professor Hannu Hänninen

The award is a recognition for Hänninen’s outstanding contribution to corrosion science and engineering in the nuclear field.

European Federation of Corrosion (EFC) has given Henri Coriou Award 2017 to Hannu Hänninen, Professor of engineering materials, in recognition for outstanding contribution to corrosion science and engineering in the nuclear field. The medal was awarded during EUROCORR & ICC 2017 congress in Prague, Czech Republic on 4th of September.

Hänninen has been an active member in the nuclear corrosion community for four decades. He has made significant contribution, initiated and successfully managed many large projects in both the field of EAC & EAF of LWR structural materials, and of waste container corrosion in final repositories for nuclear waste. Fusion and GEN-IV topics complement his broad nuclear corrosion portfolio. Furthermore, he has been active in academic teaching and education for more than three decades and, in this function has supervised more than 40 PhD students and many Post-Docs.

He is an active member in many international working groups and committees in the field of nuclear corrosion, e.g., as Chairman and Working Group Leader in the International Cooperative Group on Environmentally-Assisted Cracking of Water Reactor Materials (ICG-EAC) and as an expert at the Swedish National Council for Nuclear Waste.

Hannu Hänninen started his career at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland in 1977, during the period when Finland's existing nuclear power plants were being built. In 1980 he wrote his PhD thesis at VTT Reactor Materials research group and Helsinki University of Technology. In 1990 Hänninen started as Professor of engineering materials in Helsinki University of Technology. Since 2010 he has been the head of the Engineering Materials research group at the Department of Engineering Design and Production of the 911±¬ÁÏÍø School of Engineering, where his area of expertise is the safety of nuclear power plant structural materials.
