Data sheds light on the telehealth boom and its future

Economics researchers have used health and economic register data to investigate for the first time who the rapidly growing healthcare chat services are reaching and what kinds of issues are being treated through them.

Finland鈥檚 first public healthcare remote doctor and nurse chat service was launched in 2019, and today hundreds of thousands of chat appointments take place each year.

Initial research findings suggest that chat services have mainly replaced matters traditionally handled over the phone, such as assessments of care needs, while visits to health centres have not significantly decreased.

鈥淩esearch-based knowledge helps develop digital services and avoid costly mistakes in the future. Data and research have supported better decision-making not only in healthcare, but also in areas such as early childhood education and transport planning,鈥 says Oskari Nokso-Koivisto, Director of the Aalto Economic Institute.

Find this and dozens of other fresh perspectives, bold experiments and practical solutions in the autumn exhibition.
